It’s a first move from the Center to approve the maximum speed limit on urban city roads at 70 kmph for cars. Whereas, cargo carriers can go with 60 kmph and two-wheeler limited to 50 kmph. However, it’s in the hands of local authorities or state governments to specify the speed limits for each category addition to the safety standards.
Complete Proposal of Speed Limit of Vehicles
As of now, the ministry of road transport has set the various speed limit for various vehicles with respect to the roads. For this, local or state authorities have not set speed limits.
Presently, the local authorities have set the speed limit in urban cities 40-50 kmph. According to the sources, the ring-road growth and stretches within the city rising up. So, the ministry has to allow the vehicles to go at higher speeds.
“Since the state and its agencies have full authority to reduce the limit, they can now decide on which stretches they can allow vehicles to ply at the limit set by the Centre,” an official said.
On Wednesday, Nitin Gadkari, road transport minister has cleared the speed limit capping for all types of vehicles. The vehicles divided into four categories. Joint Secretary led committee recommended higher speed on highways and expressways on highways. On expressways, cars can pace to 120 kmph and the news reported first by TOI.
No action will have on the drivers if the speed of a vehicle is within 5% of the max speed limit. In 2016 alone, the excess speed has taken the lives of 74,000 lives and hence speed is limited in India.
