Prior to the day before Rahul Gandhi takes over the reign as a Congress President, the party clarified on the Sonia Gandhi’s role in politics. Sonia Gandhi has resigned from the party post but not from politics. Ms.Gandhi’s comments to reporters have raised the clarification on Friday morning in parliament. They said her role now was to retire. After Mr.Gandhi elevation it’s questionable what post-Sonia Gandhi will assign herself.
As president of the party, Ms.Gandhi also leads Congress Parliamentary Party. This will decide agenda of the party in Parliament. Sonia expressed her desire to switch to retirement mode, party sources told to The Hindu.
Post of Sonia Gandhi in Politics?
However, the party aims to create a patron post for Ms.Gandhi. Gandhi served as a party president for almost 19 years. The chief spokesperson of the party, Randeep Surjewala tweeted, “Would sincerely request friends in the media to not rely upon innuendos. Smt. Sonia Gandhi has retired as President of Indian National Congress and not from politics. Her blessings, wisdom and innate commitment to Congress ideology shall always be our guiding light.”
On December 11, Mr.Gandhi has claimed the throne as a party president. No other contender contested competition with Gandhi. However, the victory certificate yet has to formally reach his hands as he was settled at Gujarat for the last campaigning phase.
A formal function will light on Saturday at the party headquarters. On this occasion, Ms.Gandhi is expected to speak about the challenges and future of the party as her son takes her role.
